Help adding HD

Hello,

I recently purchased a Dimension 8300, and was wanting to add a second HD. The problem I have is that I am not familiar with SATA drives. I have a 120G now, and want to add another 120G, and I need some help with how to connect it and set it up so that the new one is my slave drive. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I haven't purchased it yet, but I plan on buying it from dell. I'm not quite sure what the difference is. I would like to know though and I will keep searching till I find the answer.

I will watch this post since I just got my system, similar to yours, and am now wanting, after 2 days, to add a 200GB HD.  Good luck.  Where did you get HD? .......newegg?  How much, if any, difference is SATA?  I have added HDs before without hassle but will wait to give instruction.

    Thanks

    IBFriendly.

The following are Dell's instructions for installing a second SATA HD in the D/8300

    http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/systems/dim8300/sm/drives.htm#1103012

You will require another SATA drive cable if the drive is OEM, if it's a retail box, then it's included.   Plug the SATA cable into SATA port 1.
You may have to turn the SATA controller on your setup to "Auto" after installing the hardware and cables.

After the drive has been installed, it must be patitioned and formated.   These are generic instructions for installing an additional hard drive using Windows XP Disk Management,
they are by Seagate, but apply to all brands,

on a side note, you should really look into adding more ram into your system.

    ERRNEMTP.

512MB of RAM is fine for XP, unless you are seriously into graphics and editing.

    Good idea.

as for me, I have 512...is there any real advantage to going more than that?

    Thanks

Probably not too heavy.  Our family will try to utilize the system for digi pics to print for scrapbooks. I really dont know how that would relate to graphics and editing.

    Thanks

I do plan on adding more memory too, at least a gig. I plan on doing a lot of video editing in the future. Thanks for all the support.
