mcafee preinstalled trial version won't update...getting really fed up!!!

Hi, My daughter has a brand new Dell Dimension C521. She registered with McAfee when prompted the first time she turned on the computer. The next time she turned it on, and every time since then, a McAfee window pops up telling her to update the virus scan. She goes thru the process with the log-in email address she used initially...It looks like it's about to start updating, then she gets various IE Script Errors that take forever to click out of. Then we're left with the blank red & white McAfee window that won't disappear without ending task by Ctrl-Shift-Esc.
I've talked to McAfee online chat technicians too many times, did their Virtual Technician diagnosis. We've been told to download a patch, but it won't let us. We've verified Windows and downloaded Script Engine files as instructed, once to a zip-file, once to desktop...nothing helped. After one of these "fixing sessions", she restarted her computer to have a blue screen dealing with "crash recovery". Their phone tech said she hasn't completed registration...he has no account associated with her email address. She can log into their site and be recognized by name with her account, but it says she has no McAfee products. The M icon is red most of the time and will even perform a scan, but it's showing as needing updated and isn't at optimized security level. I'm tired of using my cell minutes on technicians who don't help. I don't know what to do. Every time they tell me to download more to fix it, I'm afraid it's only screwing up her whole system. Nothing has fixed the ongoing problem. I tried to verify her registration by phone and was on hold for 45 minutes. No one ever picked up. HELP!!! (please?!) I never had this trouble when I bought my Dell (with preinstalled McAfee) a few years ago. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Dana

I'm not a big fan of Mcafee to start with.  Since it's only a trial version anyway, I'd uninstall it.  If you want a complete package like Mcafee, check here.  You can download free trials from 90 days to 1 year.  Personally I've been very happy with Trend Micro Internet Security.

You might also want to check with your ISP.  Many are now offering free packages to customers.  For example, Roadrunner has Computer Associates package free for customers.

Thank you for the advice! If I just go into add/remove programs and uninstall McAfee, will the other things we downloaded (as instructed by the online techs) need to be removed as well? I have no clue about this stuff. It seems like we downloaded some kinda script files that didn't help... We'll try the Trend program you linked me to.
    Thanks again!!!

I'd uninstall the other stuff as well.  If you can.
