During setup of AVG it will ask where you obtain future updates, choose "Internet" and it will attempt an update on boot up assumin you have DSL/Broadband/Always on connection, there's probably a selection to manage when it downloads updates but not needed it myself having a DSL connection.
There's the usual suspects, Norton etc but if you're after a good freebie then try
http://free.grisoft.com AVG Antivirus, have it running on a XPS Gen3 Dimension with no problems.
