Some problem with my exe.files- help

I downloaded my new Norton Internet Security 2004.The next day a couldnot open any of my exe. files. Same problem I had last year after I dowloaded NIS. It has happened to me 2x. Now I cannot scan my computer because NIS also is not working. This year after I downloaded NIS's newer verision it did not  show the little earth icon on right side. Now I think that I have some type of virus which has attacked my all exe files and NIS. Can somebody help resolve this problem? Thanks

Mila5, you shouldn't give out your emal account so freely. This is a public forum and chances are that someone could abuse it.

Please see the section of this web page written by jimw which reads:
    You're welcome!

My HOSTS file was the culprit. ...... ... Here's Sophos's article on that one.

Please note that I am not saying that your computer is infected. I simply want to point you to the safe computing links jimw provides. They can go a long way in improving your situation in the future. Please bookmark them and or save them in your favourite folder for future reference.

You can download and run a FREE and highly recommended virus scanner at http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

and cancel your Norton subscription, given the hassles you've been encountering.

    Hope this helps!
    Cheers, Pillim

On my site (Link Below) try the AV section and one of the online virus checkers, such as housecall.

If that does not work try the malware route.
Use these to remove Malware (Spyware and Adware).

    1) SpyBot Search and Destroy
After installing SpyBot Search & Destroy, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.
Next, close all Internet Explorer windows, hit 'Check for Problems', have SpyBot remove all the items it marks in red.

    2) Get Ad-Aware
After installing Ad-Aware, and before running the program, first press “check for updates now".
Click "Connect" and install all updated components available. Click 'Finish'.
Press "Scan Now", then 'next', and let Ad-Aware scan your drives.
It will find a number of "bad" files and registry keys. Click 'Next' again.
Check all found items, and click 'next' once more.
It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. Click OK.

Always reboot the computer between each program - both of these may find things that they need to have a reboot of the machine to clear - please reboot and let them finish .

Failing those solving your problems a post of a hijackthis log for the experts to advise.
    HijackThis From Here
Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Unzip HijackThis into this folder. When you run HijackThis from this folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary. Then run, scan, save log, then in notepad copy the FULL log by copy and paste as a reply to this post and an expert with HijackThis Knowldge, will have a go at giving advice. Please note the list of experts names below, very few forum regulars here have had this training.

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING WITH HIJACKTHIS WITHOUT EXPERT ADVICE
, most of what it finds you need for normal MS Windows tasks.

I think the easiest thing for you now is a reinstall.

At the top of this fourm, solutions, reinstall guides, follow the instructions for your system.

Do enable a firewall before going on the internet, see my website, firewall section for instructions. (See link below).

    Hello again,

    I did virus and security scan at the Symantec site. It said I don't have a virus or security problem. I then went into the control panel and double clicked the add/remove icon. It will not open,or open anything else in the windows. (I can open only Internet Explorer), not exe files) Is there any other way to uninstall NIS without going through the control panel? the error says the following;

Windows cannot the specified device path or file. You may not have appropriete permission to acces the item. How can I reeinstall my NIS 2004, if removal program not work?  Thank you.       Mila5

Correction.   On Virus detection - no virus find

security scan result: Antivirus product Check : Analysis - no know virus protection. Computer & data are vulnerable to virus attacks.

Like I said, 1 day my NIS work, after taht not and I cannot open NIS and all my exe files. Now I cannot remove downloded NIS 2004 and reinsall him.  Thanks. Mila5

Mila5, I hope you have created a bootdisk for your system. If yes, then insert it in the diskette drive. If no, check this link and download one http://www.bootdisk.com/

Get your operating system CD at hand. Start your system in safe mode. Booting your system in safe mode:
    1. Turn off your PC.
    2. Turn it back on and immediately when you see the blue display screen for Dell press the F8 function key two or three times.
    3. A black screen appears with a number of startup options. Use the up arrow keys to select safe mode and press the enter key.
    4. When your system starts in safe mode you need to do a file integrity check. To do this click 'Start'; select 'Run' and in the Run window type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes). If any probles are detected and it cannot resore from the cabinet files on your hard drive then it will ask you to insert the operating system CD.

Alternatively, in normal mode you can click 'Start'; select 'Run' and in the Run window type "msconfig" (without the quotes). Select the BOOT.INI tab and tick the check box '/SAFEBOOT'; click 'Ok' and click the button 'Restart'. When you no longer which to start in safe mode just run 'msconfig' again and remove the tick in the checkbox for '/SAFEBOOT' click 'Ok' and click the button to restart your system.

    Hope this helps!
    Cheeers, Phillim
