blue screen

I just set up my new Dell Dimension 4600 and after about 15 minutes I got a blue screen saying:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If first time restart. If screen appears again follow these steps properly. Check any new hardware or software installed. If this is a new installation ask your hardware or software manufacture for updates you may need.

If problems continue disable or remove newly installed software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advanced start up option and select safe mode.

I restarted PC and it worked again for an hour or so and then got the same thing. Its happened about 4 times since I got the PC set up yesterday afternoon. I called tech support but wasnt able to understand the Tech due to a heavy Indian accent. I dont know where to start as like I said the machine is right out of box and I didnt install anything.    If anyone can offer any suggestions I would appreciate it

Thanks

In the left column, click on D1, this will bring up relevant information in the right pane with some links that might give you some clues.

As it says, the most common causes are bad device drivers or bad RAM

For the RAM, try running the Dell diagnostics, see if it shows any problems.

Also check in device manager that there are no yellow warning ! marks; if there is one, that would tell you whivh device is causing problems and maybe needs driver reinstall. Right click my computer, click properties, harfware tab, click device manager.

Also check in event viewer what errors are logged. Right click my computer, click manage; In the left pane of the computer management window that opens, if necessary click on + next to System tools, then on + next to event viewer; click on system; in the right pane you will see the events logged. Scroll down to see if there are any error events (white cross on red circle) at around the time you had a crash. double click on the event. In the event properties window that opens, note source, category, event ID; note the description of the error. If you are on line, if you click the link, you will get a help and support type window from MS that may contain more information and suggestions on what to do, possibly also links to relevant MS knowledgebase articles.

    Repeat for the Application events.

Armed with the source and event ID, you could try a search on http://www.eventid.net/ to see if any solutions are offered.

You can do free search without registering, but posting a question requires registration. Click on Search events in the header, fill in ID and source, see what comes up.

    If it's a new PC,

You have to call Dell back on this one. Ask for a hardware supervisor if you can't understand the tech. Explain you are a  new owner, still within your 30 days to return. You can check the Device Manager for driver problems, but you still need help from Dell.

Before you send it back I'd look at the Device Manager for a bad driver (eg yellow or red marks). Expand all the devices. If your comfortable with opening the case you might want to reseat the memory module(s). I'd have Dell walk you through this. You may want to run this memory tester first.

Here's the best link I could find for you.
