D820 using vista - USB errors

Morning
I have a Lattitude D820 using vista and every usb item I install it askes fro drivers whereas the desktop I use also with Vista does not ask for drivers. So by this I am sure it is possibly a hardware problem but would like input. I use a D Dock with keyboards mouse, printer and scanner. I am aslo trying to use an external SATA drive via USB and I cannot get the items installed.

I have done some researh on this and found that Vista is having problems recognizing USB ext hard drives because they are attempting to be classified as disk drives and not as thumb or flash drives.  I believe this is going to be addressed in the first SP1 Vista publishes.

I work around the problem by unplugging the power from the ext drive, not the usb, when the sytem tell me the usb device is not recognized. within a minute of repluging the power back to the ext drive it picks it up and works fine.

I am using a WD essential HD. Their web site as well as Microsofts knows there is a problem.
