Files and SEttings Transfer Wizard

Dell Inspiron 530

Windows XP Home EDition

I used  this procecdure to transfer data from W98SE to Windows XP Home Edition.

I inserted the Windows XP CD on the old syst em and  recorded

primarily Outlook Express files on a CD.

It took 3 CD's and the program asked for them by number 1,2 and 3.

WWhen it  asked to insert the 3rd CD it indicated that this is 3 in a total of 3(The wordage was probably

different but that's the gist of it).  When the 3rd CD completed it closed without  asking for any

addit ional actions.  Still using The Files andSettings Transfer Wizard on the new system,  it asked

for the CD's by nr 1,2 and 3.  When nr 3 completed it asked to insert nr 4.  The only options to respond

are OK or CANCEL.  If you click OK it  advises that drive is not ready with options of RETRY OR CANCEL.

If you click Cancel that aborts the entire process.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thank You

Has anybody successfully transferred files and settings using the Transfer Wizard?

The Wizard says that the old system can be as far back as Windows 95.

Microsoft says that it will work.  I have talked to 3 different people

at Dell and they say that  it will not work.  As I indicated in my first post on this subject,

I was able to transfer My Documents files, but with some errors.  My MYPictures and

My Music files were on the CD and a folder was opened in the XP My Documents,

but no data was in either except for a sample of some sort.   No error message

was received indicating that unable to transfer those files. I read t he CD in on my old system and all of the

and all of the data was on it.

I guess that I will have to pay a commercial firm to transfer all of my data and

applications to the new system, but it irritates me t o have to pay possibly several hundred dollars

to get the system where I can use it.

When a computer manufacturer loads a Windows OS on a computer they feel that the manufacturer is

then responsible for software problems.  Dell refuses to provide any assistance for software

problems except their Pay Service, and then you are not likely to get  a resolution for a

    problem such as this.

Does anyone have any experience with programs such as PC MOVER or others tha t claim

    to transfer files.

I came here looking for some answers, as well.  Everything I could find on the web about the Files Transfer Wizard all assumes you have a network or know how they work or what a serial port looks like.  After some digging, I found my old 4300 has a serial port, but my new 530 doesn't.  So do you just connect them with the ethernet cable, or do you need to buy a hub?  No one's saying.

Anyway, most views on the Transfer Wizard are not positive, and I have heard good things of Intellimover (or whatever it's called), but the simplest way seems to be to get an external hard drive (a good idea at any time, for back-ups) or use DVDs or flash drives.

Not sure if that helps, except to know you're not alone in this.
