I tried installing a Basic Windows Vista upgrade on my E520 and it failed. Now I cannot boot up my computer. (Please see post, Dell Vista upgrade won't boot up, dated 14 April.)
My data is backed up on the Raid hard drive, not an external drive.
I forgot to say I have Norton Ghost 10. During installation of the Vista upgrade, I was advised to download a Ghost recovery file and save it to CD, because the existing recovery CD would not work with Vista. Unfortunately, the installation failed before I burned the CD. Does anyone know where I can download the recovery file from? Thank you.
Try by booting to the Vista DVD, and instead of going to Install Now option, go to Repair your computer, in there go to command prompt and if you are able to copy/paste files using cmd command do it from there... If you're not familiar with those commands, type notepad on the command line. Then click on File menu, then select open... This will open a Windows where you can browse your files, copy and then paste them into an external HDD andeven you can copy your files to a CD/DVD...
Just to give you an example after you click on open on the file menu, browse the XP directory (C:\Documments and settings\ \documents) select all the files, and then right click on them, click COPY and then browse an external HDD, Flash memory (you can even use an iPod) and then paste the files there...
