OK, got my new fangled all-in-one Inspiron 20 fired up and appeared it recognised my MSN/Windows Live ID. Anyway, it let me proceed to the initial settings and I apparently checked a box that allowed McAfee to create an account and send me an email on my other computer on the home network asking me to create a password. At this point I have not yet set a password or attempted to start McAfee
I have only gotten as far as the first screen with a few Windows 8 tiles and have not proceeded to the "Getting Started" choice yet. Not sure if I should leave the Ethernet cable connected when I turn it on again, not knowing if the Windows firewall and Windows Defender (or MSE) are on by default. I would like to get rid of the pre-installed McAfee without letting it go active, and not sure of the right way to go about this.
A final question concerns my home network, which is simply this old XPS-420 running Vista and the New Inspiron running Windows 8...which I plan to upgrade to 8.1 when I get things figured out. I have no router, but use a Quest Actiontec PK5000 modem. The page(s) for this modem has several tabs and lots of information. When I was going through the initial setup for the Inspiron it did ask me what kind of network I had, and I wasn't sure so I went on to the next page. I have no idea if this information has since somehow been acquired by the computer automatically, or if I will have to go back and find it in the Actiontec screens and enter it into the Inspiron settings at some point. All information appreciated
Thanks for the link. I fooled around with the computer for awhile and did some searches and determined that McAfee and the Windows Firewall are on and active. I went into Programs and Features and could not find Windows Defender, but when I did a search on it, it brought up a little box saying it was not active, so apparently it is on there somewhere. At some point I want to get rid of McAfee and just use the Windows Firewall and WD, or whatever it is called now. I did see something on there called Windows Essentials, but its contents don't appear to be an AV program
At some point I might try the latest version of Avast and also install a free firewall like Outpost or Online Armor. Trying to learn how to navigate this version is enough to give me a headache. Glad I bought the Inspiron before I need it. Will give me time to figure it out.
