Paring down

I am trying to free up space on my hard drive.  I find a lot of files here, for instance, and I can't say what they are.  Can I delete them?

Are there common places on your hard drive for any example that is fair game to delete files?

In XP you can go to Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup which will remove some -but not all- unnecessary files. You can usually delete anything with .tmp extension too. Open your browser and clear the disk cache which will likely get rid of lots of useless stuff.

Be careful what you delete manually unless you're absolutely sure so you don't end up breaking something important. If in doubt, copy the file to floppy or CD before you delete it from the HD.
