When you reinstall XP the default ID is the ADMIN, correct? If I use that to install Office and various utilities, and then move to a normal user id to install my family's applications, will everyone be able to use those other applications across their IDs or do I need to install them via the ADMIN?
I don't want anyone surfing while on an ADMIN id, but I'm not sure what they won't be able to do, or what will be different from what they were doing when the unknowingly had ADMIN authority.
It is much easier to create a new administrator account and delete "User." If you need to transfer any data from the User account you will probably have to take ownership of the specific folder using the procedure
here. Once the data are all transferred, when you delete the User account delete its files as well. (Keeps the system neater.)
Thank you Denny! You're just a wealth of information for me!
The system came up with a default ID of "Other". I'd rather not have a default userid as Admin. Should I change that name, assuming there is a utility for that, or simply add another ID that I'll gave Admin authority to, and then delete Other?
I'm thinking that in the past I've tried changing the userid, but the paths all stayed with the original userid name. This seems like a security outage if a hacker ever make it onto the system. At the same time I don't want to run into trouble with ownership issues down the road. I don't know if that is a valid concern or not.

See this for making applications available to all users. (Text version here.)
