Windowsupdate fails genuine validation

On my dell 600m with XP pro sp2, the new windowsupdate fails to validate the volume license product key. The message is "The Volume License Product key used to install Windows on your PC is known to be pirated." This is on the preinstalled OS from Dell. How can I update the product key to match the COA sticker?

Did you give the license key to another to use? Or, since it's a laptop, could someone have gotten the key off your computer?

As you are the second owner, maybe the OS you have is not the original Dell OEM. The first owner may have installed from another source?

I am the second owner of the computer. So I do not know what has happen in the past. The product key in system properities does not have OEM in it like my desktop system.

The "volume license key" is the one Dell used to install. You should use the one on computer itself. It is on a sticker on the tower. It is not the one that's in system properties.

I have done a repair install from a slipstream disk built with Dells XP pro SP1a and SP2 update. Now validation tells me microsoft never issued the product key.

I have not found a way to use the product key on the COA sticker. Suggestions?

First owner installed a pirated copy of windows xp pro. A complete new install from the OEM CD fixed the product license key.
