Yes, you certainly can perform encryption using Word 2002, using a number of algorithms.
The encryption algorithms that are available for use depend upon the locale, the OS and the version of Word. Encryption algorithms are also available for installation via third party packages. Because of this, if you are exchanging documents with users whose system setup differs from yours, you would need to choose a commonly supported algorithm.
Refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article for the procedure for choosing from among the available encryption algorithms [via "Advanced" in the Security tab], as well as a description of the generally available algorithms and where they may be available.
You should also research the strengths of the available algorithms with respect to your security needs. Use of long, randomly-generated passwords and an available strong encryption algorithm using the longest available key length may well suffice for your needs.
There are also a number of free and commercial encryption packages available, capable of encrypting all file types, not just Word 2002.
