• Samsung 970 Evo Plus
• Adata XPG SX8200 Pro; or
• Gigabyte Auros

I believe they are all M.2

Three different Samsung m2 drives installed concurrently: pro, 970 evo, and 981.

You can check your m2 read/write bandwidth with crystal disk mark. 

The R8's m2 mobo slot supports up to x4 lanes @ 3.0, so you should get the full rated speed on those ssd's, usually just a little north of 3k read with the Samsung.

I am trying to install a 2TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus in my R8, using the following expansion card,

The problem I am having is that when I go into disk management and try to initialize the disk it comes back with an error message;

It drive does appear in disk management so I am not too sure if there is a compatibility issue somewhere, it also does not show the size of the disk which has me somewhat suspicious.

Apologies if not in the right thread, but any assistance would be appreciated.

I think the issue may be the adapter.  The specs say it requires an x16 slot.  The R8 does not have an x16 slot.  It has an x8 slot.  The remaining 8 lanes are not wired to the pcie bus.  They are dead ends. They go nowhere.  That is odd since the M2 SSD only uses 4 lanes at gen 3.0.  But regardless, in any event, your adapter may be trying to route data via nonpowered lanes in the mobo which can't transfer over. Thus the error.
