Alienware R4 15 screen backlight randomly shuts down

Hi everyone,

I have an Alienware R4 15 for about two years now and I have this weird backlight issue. Sometimes, the backlight shuts down and it becomes very very dark to see anything on the screen. If you look very closely, you can see there is something there, so I believe the graphics are working well. I usually use an external monitor and there isn't any problem there.

This is something that apparently happens in bursts. Sometimes it works well for weeks, and then suddenly it stays around one day with this issue. I have done most of the troubleshooting that I was able to find on the internet, so I am almost sure it is a hardware problem. If so, would it be the screen or something on the motherboard?

Thanks for the help. Any ideas are appreciated.

Though it will take some disassembly, the cable that connects the display to the system board is the first suspect.

Check to make sure the connector is firmly connected to the mainboard and, if it's not a touchscreen to the back of the LCD panel.  Also verify that the cable itself is intact, no breaks or sharp creases.  If it's damaged, replace it.

If it is a touchscreen, you'll have access only to the mainboard connector (the assembly will be fused together so you can't disconnect the cable from the back of the screen).

Hi Pichimeb, did anyone ever get you an answer on this? The same thing happens to me on my Alienware M15 R4. I know it is not a cabling issue because it only happens after I turn on the overclocking. Rebooting resolves the issue til the next time. Please let me know if you found a solution.
