m17 R3, BSOD happening often

m17 R3 with i9, 32GB, 2080 video.

I have been getting numerous BSOD ever since I bought this in Nov 2020. It is getting to be increasingly frustrating that it has happened. I have rebuilt the system numerous times and the only non-Dell driver I have is the Nvidia drivers direct from the manufacturer. The details of the BSOD I have seen come from BSODViewer:

This was a Dell Outlet purchase so I cannot help but wonder if the reason it was refurbished was due to the BSOD I am experiencing. Any suggestions on what to try to fix this issue?

Hi welcome to this user to user discussion forum. This is not Dell Support.

Thank you for including image that says Plug and Play (PNP) detected fatal error and Reference by pointer, bug check. Your Dell Outlet purchase has a first year basic Dell warranty.

Reliability Monitor and its event timeline should reveal the Critical Event's corresponding Microsoft error code. Search online for similar error code and its fix/solution might be your fix.

Please run Intel Driver & Support Assistant to identify your product and get driver and software updates for most of your hardware and software.

Please click on Kudos to say thank you for response from user that is not employed by Dell. Please share an update on progress, so that other users derive benefit from your experience. Thank you.

I am well aware of that.  Dell Support hasn't done much other than say "reinstall drivers" and "reinstall Windows" so far.  I was a certified Dell Tech (let them lapse because I no longer work on Dell systems at my job), been A+ certified since 1999, and have numerous industry hardware/software certs that are active.  I just LOVE how they keep insisting it is my software and cannot be hardware related.  Came to this forum to see if any of us have dealt with this before.

Take Windows out of the diagnostic picture entirely and run the hardware diagnostics from F12 at powerup.  If you see a hardware error, as you know it'll result in a 2000-xyza error code that points toward the faulty component.

Hi @AngryIn88011  thank you for sharing extra information about your professional capabilities. Yes, I know about Dell Support capabilities, and I am still awaiting response to my Dell Report an Unresolved Issue form that continues to be active.

Please visit your online Dell account and ask Dell Support to create a Service Request for you, so that Dell knows that there is a problem to fix under your paid for warranty. Thank you.

Please share an update on progress, so that other users derive benefit from your experience. Thank you.

It has frozen in the diagnostic tests.  Further, it has frozen in both during the memtest when booted off Hiren's Boot CD and while trying to reinstall Windows from Microsoft original DVD media.  The "short" memory test from F-12 said it would take 7.5 hours to run.  The Dell tech told me to power off the system, he went in, uninstalled a Windows update (311) and said that was the problem.  It is BSOD again even after that.Capture2.JPG

I have called into Dell numerous times today and they are trying to say that it is my software and it cannot be the hardware.  BS!  Software tools do not always find hardware problems and the FACT that it is freezing on read-only media (just did it again on the Windows DVD) while trying to test hardware/install new OS shows that it is a hardware issue.  The only common thing between the Windows 10 OS I was using, a Microsoft DVD and Hiren Boot CD is the hardware.  I have had problems with all 3 pieces of software.

I am fed up with this system and Dell's lack of competent support.  I think it might be time for me to get a Clevo again.

NOTE: I had 2 BSOD on this system since I started writing this reply.  I was in a PE environment using a web browser with one of these crashes.

    @AngryIn88011

The REFERENCE_BY_POINTER bug check has a value of 0x00000018. This indicates that the reference count of an object is illegal for the current state of the object. You can use a debugger to help analyze this problem. For more information, see Crash dump analysis using the Windows debuggers (WinDbg). The !analyze debug extension displays information about the bug check and can be helpful in determining the root cause.

When did this BSOD problem start?  Reliability Monitor and its event timeline should reveal the Critical Event's corresponding Microsoft error code. Search online for similar error code and its fix/solution might be your fix.

I also think you should run the ePSA test after you run all the steps I recommend. If it still freezes it’s a BIOS issue that might need re-flashing to a newer version or the current version.

also I think it’s cool you have an A+ certification cause I plan on getting mines soon.

Quick Tip: If your laptop has voltage / charging issues, try shutting it down, unplugging power from laptop, hold power button down for 30 seconds to do a full reset!

I would recommend turning the laptop all the way off and disconnect the CMOS and main Battery, then proceeding to hold the power button to drain all the power in the system. Plug both those back in and then remove the ram sticks. Insert only one stick and test it in each slot with that one stick. Then if all slots work but the memory stick has an issue test every stick.

The ram is soldered in so removing them is not wise.
