I've got problem with my Avamar Virtual Edition 6.1 and restoring files from client side. On our FileServer (Windows 2008) we've got Avamar Client, which backups several directories.
We're using the same DataSet on three different FilesServers in three different localizations, so there're some directories which only exists on one client, thats why backup ends always with exceptions. But that's not problem.
From couple of months we cannot restore any files from client side - simply because when I choose "Restore" from TaskBar icon in the web client there are no backups! I see that backups are finished in History (with "No file were found for this backup" message), but in the Browse window the only backup is from May (which should expire log ago).
But from MCgui - I see all backups and I can restore them. So the problem is that clients do not see them. I cannot give access to MCgui to everyone, so right now is really time consuming to restore anything, because all request are pointing at me :-(
Does anyone has some idea or clues how to resolve it?
I will assume that when you said TaskBar icon, you means Desktop/Laptop icon.
DTLT usually is connected to LDAP for authentification, so you can open it and perform backups and restores for the user you are loged into Windows. Generally there is a policy that prevents the last backup to expire, so you will allway have at least one backup.
And by the other side, when you run schedule backups from Avamar GUI, they dont have to be associated with LDAP despite it is from the same box.
So, the first thing I will try, just to check if the icon is for DTLT, would be to do right clic on it and run "Back up now", then after it is finished, go to restores and check if there is a new backup. You can also go to "Manage -> Activate client" to check what user is loged in.
If you preffer to continue doing backups through Avamar GUI, you can create Operators users for Backup/Restore at Domain level for the Domain where the fileservers resides on, so thay can perform backups and restores by themselves.

The task bar icon is not specific to DTLT.

It doesn't matter whether the backups were created on-demand from the client or by a scheduled policy. Backups are not associated with user accounts in the way that's described here -- on Windows all backups run as the SYSTEM account by default, even on-demand backups.
When a user logs into the DTLT interface, there is a mapping performed between the LDAP user account used to log in and the ownership of the files in the backup. The DTLT application does not permit users to restore files they do not own.
It may be helpful to have support look at this as I know that certain issues during the backup itself can prevent us from storing information required to perform this mapping. One thing you can check on your own -- make sure the client is running version 6.1 of the client software.

The "keep last backup" setting is optional and defaults to false. The vast majority of customers have the "keep last backup" functionality disabled.

I agree that creating restore operator accounts for those who need to perform restores is likely the best way to resolve this but not for the reasons described. Scheduled backups can still be restored through the DTLT GUI as long as the user logging into the DTLT interface owns the files that need to be restored. Preventing scheduled backups from being restored through the DTLT GUI would be a very poor design.
A restore operator account can be created at the client level or the sub-domain level to restrict access to particular client systems or groups of client systems and this will provide restore-only access to the backups for these systems through the Avamar GUI. This may meet your needs better than the DTLT interface.

Yes, the client is running 6.1 software.

We have this option enabled.

The client was installed as domain administrator and we're trying to restore files using the same account.
Maybe just to clarify:
-Avamar GUI is the java based program (Avamar Administrator Client) where all administration is done, right?
-DTLT is webpage which shows after choosing "Restore..." from taskbar,
If above definitions are valid, then we have got problems with Avamar GUI - Backup/Restore and admin users cannot restore files because every choice with restore were grayout, they only can restore to original location, which cannot take place for our users. That's way we forgot it... But maybe after last update something changed - I must check it.
Right now I'm performing on-demand backup from client side, to check if those file will be visible for restore. Is there possibility to choose Dataset defined on server as default for client?
Just after checking on-demand backup from client side - the problem still persist. I don't see any backups from client :-(
