We have a new installation of Avamar and Data Domain. We are using the most current version of the proxy I am aware of AvamarCombinedProxy-linux-sles11_64-6.1.101-87.ova.
Using vSphere 5.1, we have 22 datastores with 10-15 VMs per Datastore all backed by large 15k Enterprise Storage solution. We currently have 6 proxies and we are using CBT.
Whenever we start a backup, our monitoring system starts alerting us about disk latency and we actually have some systems go offline. I have a few questions to try and solve this issue
Should each be on its own datastore?
Is there any best practice or guide for #of proxies per vm, or anything that has some sort of design suggestions.

Hello,
Have you try to mesure the disk latency from your vSphere Client? The VMware best practice are asking for a datastore latency under 30ms (Troubleshooting Storage Performance in vSphere – Part 1 – The Basics | VMware vSphere Blog - VMware Blogs).
As far as I know, you should use one proxy for about 15 VMs. In my case I deploy 12 proxies per GRID and it's ok, I never met latency problem.
What kind of SAN do you use?
