Celerra Manager Slow

New to the Celerra product. I have configured my connection to the NS20 and I am able to run the Celerra Manager to perform other tasks. The issue i'm seeing it the web interface is painfully slow. This will not work. Is there a way to speed up the connection speed or some tweaks I can try?

Also, I used to be a CX3-10 admin and was in NaviSphere all the time. Is the NS20 restricted to use the Celerra Manager, or does NaviSphere work on this product as well. Again, so far, just a novice on the NS20.

Thanks

    welcome to the forum,

what model is this unit ? I find web interface bearable to use but prefer to use cli. You can download documentation cd from here, it contains all the manual and cli commands you would ever need :)

The model is an NS20FC. We will be iusing ot for iSCSI.

Is the Celerra Manager the only management app for this model? Meaning, will Navisphere work for this product? I ask as I tried to run the Service Task Bar against this model and it didn't want anything to do with it.

    Thanks!

since this is a fibre enabled Celerra you will continue using Navisphere to provision the back-end storage. There are rules you have to use when provisioning storage to Celerra. Check out this page for more documentation, procedures etc. What code are you running ? If you are on 5.6, you should have ARP_proxy enabled and that allows you to connect to Navisphere backend through the Control Station.

starting with version 5.5.31 NAT can be converted to ARP_Proxy. Can you run this command from the control station, scramble your IP though

    /nasmcd/sbin/clariion_mgmt -info

take a look at this solution: emc175337 .

before you start with this process, su to root first (do not use "su -")

when you get to the point in the solution to run this command

    /nasmcd/sbin/clariion_mgmt -start -spa_ip 10.64.247.147 -spb_ip 10.64.247.148 -use_proxy_arp

instead of 10.64.xxx specify your IP addresses that you would like to use to access SPA/SPB on the backend. Make sure they are on the same subnet as your Control station.

from the DART 5.5 release notes:

    Required Java Runtime Environment
EMC strongly recommends the use of Java Runtime Environment
(JRE) 1.4.2_06 or a higher 1.4.2 revision on client machines that will
run Celerra Manager. You can get an installable version of JRE 1.4.2
from the Sun Microsystems website at
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html or from the Celerra
    Applications and Tools CD.

The use of Celerra Monitor, provided with Celerra Manager -
Advanced Edition, requires installation on the client computer of the
Java Web Start package. This package is part of JRE 1.4.2 revisions.
You can use JRE 1.4.0 or 1.4.1 with Celerra Manager, but you may see
performance issues with these earlier revisions.

A bug in version 1.4.2 of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
sometimes causes the browser to crash when switching between
objects in the navigation pane in Celerra Manager or when clicking
rapidly without giving the browser time to respond.

Required Web browsers for Celerra Manager use
Celerra Manager has been tested with the Internet Explorer and
    Netscape browsers.
◆ Internet Explorer 6.0 is the minimum version required to run
Celerra Manager. EMC recommends using Internet Explorer 7.0.
◆ Netscape 6.2.3 or a higher 6.x or 7.x revision is required to run
Celerra Manager. For the best Netscape experience with Celerra
Manager, EMC recommends using Netscape 7.1 or a higher 7.x
    revision.

converting from NAT to proxy-arp is not going to change anything on the Celerra Manager performance

Yes, its cleaner and allows better use of NaviSphere and Navi Taskbar - but it doesnt matter if he's not using Navi a lot

    Hi,

Celerra Manager gets used for NAS part like NFS, CIFS or ISCSI

NaviSphere only covers the disk setup and Fibre Channel config - so if you are doing ISCSI (which is done by the Celerra piece) you need to use Celerra Manager.

Can you clarify what you mean with slow ?

slow to start? how many seconds ?
or any specific actions being slow ? how long ?

Here are some tips for a good Celerra Manager user expierience:

    - used the supported browser (see release notes for your release)
    - only use the supported Java Runtime version
    - make sure DNS resolution for your control station host name *and* reverse resolution works

Here's what I see when connecting to a lab NS20 over DSL+VPN across the country (actually going VPN to Boston and back to Germany):

around 25 seconds to get the login screen
at 50 sec the first part Celerra home shows
at around 90 sec the Navigation Tree on the left is refreshing
at most two minutes after initial Internet Explorer entering the URL its fully loaded and refreshed
From then on its around 4-5 seconds till like clicking on "File System" and the screen to load and being fully populated.
config is Windows XP Pro, IE 6.0.2900 and JRE 1.6.0_03-b05

When I use Remote Desktop to a Windows box thats located in the lab its faster
Like on XP virtual machine with IE6 JRE 1.5.0_12b4 its at most a minute till you get the full view with the green checkmark
on the Navigator tree that show all config has been loaded
pressing a part of the navigation tree there its like two seconds to open

DART 5.6.43 on the NS20 - older version may vary - there have been a number of performance increases for Celerra Manager over the time
