Network Discovery - Can we shut it off?
Hi -
We have recently switched to buying Dell servers, and have started to set up OME to manage them. We were a bit disappointed to find that we need to enable Windows Network Discovery.
We would rather not have Network Discovery on 24/7/365 if at all possible. We have historically turned it off as a security measure. I have been playing with the results in OME if we turn it back off after the initial discovery and inventory for a given server and it seems to be okay.
However, I would like to ask after making this our default procedure:
- What features/alerts/updates might we miss without Network Discovery being enabled full-time?
- What else might depend on it (Repository Manager, SupportAssist)?
- Is there any alternative configuration that would allow us to keep it off, at least after initial inventory?

Thank you. I had actually seen those two threads and was experimenting -- I was able to discover and inventory servers with Network Discovery turned off so I felt that for the most part we could at least find and inventory. I was just wondering if there were other features that depended on it -- ones that we haven't actually had to use yet. But this sounds like it was needed for a specific OS/configuration.
If we do encounter any issues that Network Discovery massages away, I will post again. Again, many thanks!

Hello
The only information I can find on it is in regard to SNMP discovery on Windows Server 2008. If you are not affected by that scenario then I can't think of any reason you need it enabled. Some of the developers responded to a similar post.
