 If the volume replicated by either EQL or MS DFS?    If so then UNMAP isn't supported. 

 Is this a CSV volume or just an NTFS volume? 

 Normally on a standard NTFS volume with 2012+  UNMAP is done by the OS on the fly as files are deleted.  If you delete files inside a CSV/VHDX file those don't initiate an UNMAP. 

 EQLRethin does not take too long to run typically.  Normally without significant impact to performance.  After hours is always best for maint. 

Do you still have a support contract?   that firmware is pretty old.  ALL EQL customers are urged to upgrade to 10.0.3.  or at the minimum 9.1.9.

4) Support contract expired so I'm out of luck for any firmware/software updates (but I do have kit_V7.1.14-R427112_945350088 to kit_V9.1.2-R440008_1189828394 that I downloaded before expiry plus the kit_64's), not sure which to upgrade to 64's or others

i have 7.1.5 running, 7.1.14, 8.1.11, 9.0.0, 9.1.2 are the ones i grabbed

No DFS running either

My client considered it, but the cost was approx 4k less than buying a new one that would have another 3years so they opted not to bother

So i should be all good to go running eqlrethin drive: (from server with HIT) and do some firmware updates thru SanHQ

Pretty sure you also need the 8.x firmware as well.  Can't jump from 7.x to 9.x.  And you really need the latest 9.1.x.   Have you considered extending it? 

 What about Microsoft DFS?  Is that enabled? 

  If not then your can run EQLTHIN.

Re:EQLthin.  Yes I don't see anything to prevent you from running it. 

 Does the SAN get verified backups?   

 Firmware updates aren't done via SANHQ.   There is a utility called DSUM,  Dell Storage Update Manager that will. Personally I prefer using the serial ports.  Transfer the KIT file via FTP.   Connect to the active controller, login and run 'update'.  

  When that finishes do a restart to restart the secondary.   When that finishes it will failover and restart what was the primary.  I use a terminal server to connect to both ports so i can monitor the process very closely. 

 Which brings up another reason for the contract.  Should something go wrong with the update or otherwise getting support might be difficult.  Not all regions offer support for a fee on Equallogic arrays.  

 Also periodically drive firmware updates are released as well.

 Well the drive FW kit is up to 13 I think is latest.   

 You CAN do it remotely.  But if something fails, serial port maybe only option for tirage.   So if you have it ready and testing and someone can move cables that's best.  Instead of trying to find it and get it working while the array is down, or even just a controller.
