The very first command will give you the list of configured hotspares. When they are "idle" you'll see a lot of zeroes in the output. When they are invoked you'll see different numbers.

Recent S.E. do offer "-failed" as symdisk option. What version are you running ??

Not sure why it would give you an invalid argument for symdisk list -failed...works fine for me:

    C:\>symdisk -h

    NAME

symdisk - Reports on the configuration and status of disks
and their hypers within Symmetrix arrays.

    SYNOPSIS

    symdisk [-h]

symdisk [-sid SymmID] [-v [-hypers] [-spare_info] [-gaps]]
    [-hotspares] [-cyl] [-by_diskgroup] [-disk_group <#>]
    [-failed]

    C:\>symdisk list -failed

    Symmetrix ID : 000184502716

    No devices were found

    Symmetrix ID : 000187900648

    C:\>symcli

Symmetrix Command Line Interface (SYMCLI) Version V6.5.0.0 (Edit Level: 872)

John probably I was looking at the wrong place.. Maybe there is an issue with symcli quick reference card (straight from S.E. 6.5 documentation CD) since it still contains the following:

    symdisk [-h]
    symdisk [-sid SymmID][-v [-hypers][-spare_info] [-gaps]]
    [-hotspares][-cyl][-by_diskgroup] [-disk_group #]
    list [-da <#|ALL>] [-interface <#|ALL>] [-tid <#|ALL>]
    symdisk [-sid SymmID] [-cyl]
    show DiskAddress [-gaps_only]

I'll edit my post to reflect this misleading mistake...

V6.0.1.0 does not support while V6.5.0.0 does
