this program cannot be run in dos mode when updating the bios

I wanted to update the bios differently than usual. I wanted to do it with a freedos level. I downloaded a file with this bios from the dell website and made a bootable pendrive first using rufus, then using the Dell Diagnostic Deployment Package and I got one and the same message "this program cannot be run in dos mode". what could be the cause of this?

    it does not matter whether it is win 11 or 10 or else, you are trying to run bios.exe on dos level when booting pc via bootable usb.  did you copy this program on the usb and try to run it?

    Vostro_3471_3671_Inspiron_3471_3671_1.11.0.exe

    Dell Diagnostic Deployment Package is a way to prepare a bootable usb by deleting most files in the package and only copying the following essential boot files to usb using the DDDP tool.

    COMMAND.COM
    DELLBIO.BIN
    DELLRMK.BIN
    AUTOEXEC.BAT
    CONFIG.SYS

    update bios has intrinsic risk so general advice is to do it only when absolutely needed.  if your pc is running fine no good reason to update bios.  the bugs that are supposedly fixed by bios update often have no relevance to common user.

    but if you still insist on updating bios, prepare a bootable usb (using Dell method is one good way) and then copy the above .exe on it.  boot pc from the usb  then run the .exe.

     @piotrekDell

    Latitude E6430 in the YouTube video is from 2013 not an Intel core I3 I5 I7 past 6th gen 2015 sky-lake.

    MS-DOS or FREE-DOS is NEVER supported nor is XP / VISTA / WIN7 / WIN8

    OS and bios is no longer LEGACY MBR.

    Its UEFI GPT 64 BIT ONLY

    64 bit WINDOWS 10 or 11 ONLY.

    What you are asking for is NEVER supported.

    NTVDM doesnt exist in 64 bit windows 10 or 11.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/compatibility/ntvdm-and-16-bit-app-support

    NTVDM is a Feature on Demand and only supported on the x86 version of Windows. It is not supported on x64 and ARM versions of Windows, which do not support 16-bit x86 code of any kind, including DOS programs.

    There are only 2 ways to update the BIOS as listed on this support page. One is from Windows and the other is from the BIOS boot menu using the file on a non-bootable flash drive.

    I am not a Dell employee...I am forum volunteer

    Serious work on an E5430 and constantly building and working on an i5-6500 Desktop

    Okay? But why if I want to release updates from the level of dos it gets this message. I would like to install this update as in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIKKEKjo2kg&t=151s. I do everything like in the movie, but I don't want to work.

    @piotrekDell

    DOS is not supported for a while now because Bios files use 64 bit certificates and file sizes larger than dos can handle as well as FAT32 file system which is not supported by MSDOS.  WIN95B  WIN98 etc do but those are not supported as far as 64 bit bios certificates which is why this must be run from BIOS or from windows as administrator.  This is also why 32 bit Legacy MBR is not supported past 6th GEN Skylake Core processors.  This means MSDOS, WIN95, XP, VISTA, 7 and ANY other 32 bit os is also NEVER supported.

    Dos is 41 years old now. Being much older than that means I know about the original INTEL 4004 CPU and CPM and other os that came decades before DOS.

    @redxps630

    DDP diag usb sticks are MSDOS based.

    They DO NOT work on systems that are UEFI GPT NON CSM  CLASS 3 BIOS past 2015 skylake 6th GEN ANY DELL ANY MODEL.

    They are VERY OLD Legacy tools for 15 year old Optiplex Dimension ETC models.  Suggesting this to the OP is not going to work and is NOT supported.

    They also made CDROM ISO files available for these and they too DO NOT WORK on newer models. Note how these are pre windows 8.x being much older than 2012 aka 2006 or 2007 which means models with VISTA max. CDD 1220 is from 2003

    So the version  I show in the last post is for my XPS 420 from 2007 only works on ancient FAT 2 gig flash drive. Might work on FAT32 flash Haven't tried that.

    I just wanted to learn something new, hence the question. I'm a beginner when it comes to computer science and I did not want to update the bios by downloading the file itself and clicking from windows. He wants to learn something new. Thanks for the helpful advice. That's how I learn too.

    So I understand that ntvdm would also not do anything? Because, to be honest, I tried everything. I made a booted pendrive using rufus and ninie gave. Then using dddp. Also nothing.
