Go to SolutionLatitude e6540, low CPU speed during games
I am using Dell Latitude e6540 i7 4610m with Radeon 8790m. It has a problem that the clock speed is very low after 30-40 minutes playing game (LOL, GTA San Andreas).
I start the game, and the clock is 3.6ghz.
20 mins later, the clock is 2.6ghz
20 mins later, sometime is 30 mins later, the clock is 1.0ghz then 0.9ghz. Very bad performance.
No overheat, the temp is 70-80 C Degree, some time is 85 degree. I'm using mx4. Cpu 16%- 30%-40%- 50% all the time, latest BIOS.
Anyone have idea ? Pls help me. Many thanks. And sorry for my bad English.

I used to have same problem with my Dell Latitude e6540
First you need to make sure that all off you driver is updated. You can go to Support | Dell US
Then download the Dell Power Manger from Microsoft Store then choose Thermal Management -> Cool
this will lower cpu clock speed from 2.9ghz to 2.4 ghz this will help keep your cpu temp
under 80 C Degree and your cpu will stay at 2.4 ghz when you play game

Many thanks for your advices, I did it all but seem my laptop have no problem with my SSD and 8g Ram ( dont need Virtual Memory). I have replaced thermal paste last month. Agree that class laptop bussiness not meant for gaming but these games are low spec game. I very dissapointed. I have cpu i7 4610m and VGA AMD 2gb still cant play a very old game (GTA San Andreas) and a popular game (LOL) , the clock speed is very low while I'm playing for a while. Well, maybe I will quit gaming. So sad.

same problem here.Maybe the bios problem ?.Play some normal game like lol is kindda fine but with some heavier game , cpu started to throttle to 0.8 ghz and stayed there for good .When i checked the Throttestop, i said that GPU POWER as the limit reason.Temp are quite fine ,no thermal stuff.Plz i have been suffering for days now.

maybe this could help you.Download throttlestop latest ver.Do some undervolting on CPU core and cache and the intel gpu if u want.Then go to the FIVR , then change the non turbo boost ratio from 0 to 1.Also if u want some better temp , u could tick the Overclock box on turbo boost ration and set anything to 34 ( 3.4 ghz max) or whatever value u want .This should keep u in the base clock if u throttle .Is not a complete solution but aleast base clock is better than 0.8 ghz :v
I have same problem my laptop is latitude e6540 i7 4810mq with ati8790m ..I used to play gta v on low and it's like 50-60 fps but recently the fps keeps dropping from 60 to 40 then 30 then 14 and some time it crashes so i checked the cpu clock to found that when i start the game it's fine but after few minutes it keeps dropping tell it get to 0.8v so I assumed it a thermal throttling so i checked the temp but found it's around 80 which isn't bad or it's not the point that cause throttling but I changed the thermal paste to make sure and cleaned the fan but no change..keep in mind that I used my laptop to play many games like tomp raider and far cry 3 and gta v for like 2years and my experience was so good at low settings so what have changed recently...is it the lifespan of the cpu???

The E6540 is a business class laptop and not meant for gaming???
First thing is to do a “Disk Cleanup”
Check everything except “Delivery Optimization Files”
Click on “OK” then “Delete Files”
Next do a “Disk Defragmentation and Optimize”
Click on “Optimize”
If an SSD is installed you do not need to run “Defrag”
Next go to “Advanced System Settings”
In the “Performance” box click on “Settings”
Click on “Adjust for Best Performance”
Then click on “Apply”
Next click on the “Advanced” tab.
Make sure “Programs” is selected in the “Processor Scheduling” box.
In the “Virtual Memory” box click on “Change”
Click on “Custom Size”
Set “Initial Size (MB)” larger than the “Recommended:” size.
Then set the “Maximum Size (MB)” larger than the “Initial Size (MB)”
Click on “SET” and then “OK”
REBOOT:
Because of the age you may want to replace the CPU/GPU thermal paste???
