Dell Dimension 4600 problem with SuSe 9.0

Hi,

I installed Suse 9.0 on Dell Dimension 4600. The Graphics is not coming proper. I tried changing monitors , but the same problem exists. I am only getting a very low resolution. Anybody has any suggestions ? Could it be becuse of the inbuilt graphics card with low memory ? Would plugging in an external graphics card work ? Any suggestions ?

Thanks,

Nisha

Yes, update your BIOS (download updater program from Dell). The latest version (I think it's A09) solves the problem. After the BIOS update (and before trying to reconfigure your settings via YaST) you may also need to enter the BIOS setup and change the pre-allocated video memory from 1 MB to 8 MB. I did, and it worked. Intel talks about the problem in relation to their 82865G chipset. I did *not* monkey with XF86Config as some people have done (see thread below).

    Thanks..

I cannot find any Bios change utility in Dell site. Where do I get it from ?  Does it mean I dont have to plug in an external graphics card ?

    Try this link...

The updater is an executable that can be run from within Windows.
