Dell-Linux compatibility

Hello,

I have Dell Dimension 4600 and it's awesome!  That is, it works great on Windows NT family OS.  However, I am having problems activating sound in Linux Mandrake.  What Linux versions do you guys run that work for all of Dell's functions including sound?  And, if you have advice on how to fix sound in Mandrake don't hesitate to share your knowledge.

Thanks,
Victor.

    Hi,

Thanks for the message.  I've been thinking about SuSe for some time now but wasn't sure if it's any better than Mandrake.  Probably I'll give it a go.  Did you mean SuSe Personal or Professional?

    Victor.

Currently I'm running SuSE Pro 9.2 (KDE 3.4). I beieve that the eval is for professional. If you choose to install SuSE via. I'm actually pretty sure that SuSE has stopped making a personal edt. of their os and now just manufacture pro. (I'm not 100% positive)

I know that SuSE 9.1 supported SBLive! which used the same drivers as your Creative sound card. So I am going to go out on a limb and say that SuSE 9.2 will support it. It should also support just about everything else in your computer. For myself, I installed SuSE 9.2 with my Inspiron 700m and everything worked perfect (even the wireless internet)! If you would like to see if it works you should try the "live" distro, you can find the live-eval for SuSE here.

PS. SuSE 9.3 will be out in about 3 weeks :)

I used a lot of live CDs before I took the plunge, and oddly enough the onboard sound card in my DimV400 has never given me any problems at all, but my super-nice, click-on-the-box-to-upgrade, factory installed everything Dim4500 had no sound whatsoever with anything except Slackware and it's Live counterpart, Slax.

My soundcard is a Soundblaster Live! WDM series, which I always have to remember not to mentally transpose as a "WMD Series". ;)

Replacing a sound card is not difficult or expensive, though. I wouldn't recommend chosing a distro that works on your sound card so much as a sound card that works on your favorite distro. ;)

That's cool. I switched to Fedora 3 and installed OSS. Now my sound card is being detected and everything works great. Dell is a good computer, if only they made it more Linux-compatible that would be awesome.
