is a 3.5 kernel being prepped?

I just noticed a reference to a 3.5 kernel image on this page. Is that something that Dell is working towards in the near future?

Granted, today's 3.5 build seems to be x86 and not amd64... is that for a local VM for some testing for you guys?

    Hi @iandouglas736-

I'm Kamal from Canonical, the maintainer of the Sputnik kernel PPA.

The Sputnik image and Sputnik 3.2 kernel are still based on Ubuntu 12.04 ("Precise"), but I also provide the 3.5-based Sputnik kernel in the same PPA for the convenience of anyone who wants to experiment with the in-development Ubuntu 12.10 ("Quantal") release.

Also note that the kernel patches which have comprised the Sputnik kernel are getting integrated bit by bit into the standard Ubuntu kernels.  As of next week, all of the patches should be integrated into the 3.5-based Quantal kernel.

All of my PPA kernels should be available for both amd64 (recommended) and for x86 (because the build system builds it automatically).  Depending on available build machines, sometimes one of those appears before the other.

Any news on this, please? I'm really struggling with wifi on at least on AP, and it looks like an upgrade to the 3.5 kernel in 12.10 might fix the problem. Cheers, -Mike.

    Hi Mike-

Your best bet is probably to just go ahead and upgrade your system to Ubuntu 12.10, which works just fine on the XPS 13 (that's what I usually run on my XPS 13 these days).  The stock 12.10 kernel will work fine on your XPS 13 machine, except for the backlight controls.  And after upgrading you can even re-enable the Sputnik kernel PPA to regain that functionality.

For reference, it is also valid to do a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10 using the regular ubuntu-12.10-desktop-amd64.iso and then (optionally) add the Sputnik kernel PPA.

    -Kamal

Have the PPA's moved to a new location ?

Working for me (approx 1030am, GMT, 2012-12-13).

I've taken the PPA, too - will see if everything's fixed when I next take the machine home.  Thanks or the feedback, Kamal.

No, the Sputnik PPA's have not been moved... we had just inadvertently omitted the 12.10 (quantal) version package from the sputnik-policykit PPA.  I've just fixed that, so now both Sputnik PPA's properly supply updates for either Ubuntu 12.04 (precise) or Ubuntu 12.10 (quantal).  For reference, those two Sputnik project PPA's are:

       launchpad.net/.../sputnik-kernel

(supplies any additional kernel components not yet in stock Ubuntu kernel)

       launchpad.net/.../sputnik-policykit

           (enables "Hibernate" menu item)

Backlight still not working for me in Ubuntu 12.10 and sputnik-ppa.

Do you think that I should do a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 to make it work? cheers ales
