Alienware R4 Upgrade Question
Hi, I currently have an Alienware R4 with an 875W PSU. It currently houses 2 Nvidia Geforce 780 GTX cards in SLI configuration.
I am wanting to upgrade to an Nvidia GeForce 980 GTX SLI configuration instead, and had a few quick questions if there are any experts out there.
1) Will this PSU be sufficient for the upgrade?
2) According to the specs I notice my existing cards use 1x 8-pin and 1x 6-pin for the PCI-e power connectors. The new cards I was looking at use 2x 8-pin. Would I be able to simply buy 2x 6-pin to 8-pin power adapters to compensate for this, or are there other considerations?
3) Should I be overly worried about the new cards not being able to fit? I know Dell setups are generally proprietary so I was worried if they purposely restrict the case size to only allow a very limited range of upgrading.

Ah thanks that is very helpful. I had not even thought about that. I was actually buying that model thinking it would run cooler and quieter with those big fans (Twin Frozr V), but I suppose they will just blow hot air on each other.
A bit disappointing because one my biggest concerns of my current system is the fan noise and temperature. My current config starts to hit 75 degrees with the fans running 100% during modern games like Witcher 3, and my goal with this upgrade was to stress the system less so it can run cooler and quieter.
As it stands now I stare at my temps and fan speeds my entire gaming session because of this paranoia that I will overheat or overstress my system :)

Just a quick follow-up question. Are the new model of Alienware machines designed to allow cooler temperatures during load or would I expect to get relatively the same temperatures as I get with my R4?

1. Yes.
2. If you don't have enough 8-pins, you can either get a 6-pin to 8-pin adapter or get a 8-pin cable. So pretty much, adapters should work.
3. Depends on what length the GPUs are. Dual GTX 780s fit in there, so I don't see why dual 980s can't.
Can you link us which GPUs you are wanting to get?
