Dell has not tested an Alienware X51 computer with a NVIDIA GTX 670 video card. However looking at the specs of this video card it looks like it can be used on this model. I am assuming you are using a compatible 500watt power supply with this 670 video card. Also request you to check if the video card is connected properly.

If everything is tried then the CMOS battery needs to be replaced as 5 beeps on the computer represent a CMOS battery failure or it might not be compatible with this video card.

Do reply with your findings.

Hi thanks for reply. I just disconnected the cmos battery and reconnected and I don't get the 5 beeps no more which is great but I'm stuck and start up screen telling me to insert cd.. What should I do from here thanks ?

Access the BIOS and check the boot mode and boot priority, make sure is set to boot from the HDD.

I know you've reported it's working now, but I wanted to check something with you as I also have an EVGA 670 FTW that's working just fine.

As I'm sure you have the 330W power supply looking at your original spec, have you also made sure to connect both power leads into the 670 card itself? You'll need a converter for one as the socket is recessed too far for the standard Dell plug to properly connect.

Yes I did all of the above just needed to disconnect cmos battery and reconnect then everything worked fine.

Just out of interest what are your gpu idle temps.. And what setting are you using in precision x? I'm trying to get the best set up for battlefield 3. Thanks.

Usually somewhere between 30-40C - I use the optimus set up so my X51 is connected to my TV/AMP via the onboard HDMI, so normally the Intel GPU is running the show until I start gaming and the 670 takes over. Then I see the GPU up at 70-80 depending on the game (mix of Borlderlands 2, Far Cry 3 and World of Tanks).

Can't use Precision-X as it doesn't like Optimus, and just kills the machine every few seconds - have told EVGA numerous times but they ignore me as they consider Optimus a laptop function even though the X51 is clearly a desktop. I use MSI Afterburner instead without any issues to control the fans better than the drivers (no other options) and take great delight in telling EVGA every opportunity I can.
