wireless connection drops

Hi All,

Thanks in advance for any advice. I've had my X51 for a few weeks now and have NOT had much luck with maintaining a solid wireless connection. Dell has sent a service person to my home and replaced the wireless antenae which has NOT made a significiant difference.

I'm NOT opposed to replacing the internal WiFi card myself if that will fix the problem. (I'd prefer this to having to schedule another service visit).

Can anyone summarize if this WILL fix the issue? If so which card might be best, or if in fact replacing the internal card is the BEST fix? If it's NOT the best option what is?

Please be as specific as possible with your recommendations.

Thanks!

Gary

I don't know if this is an option for you, but here is what I did:

I had a wireless lynksis USB WiFi stick laying around, plugged it in the back. Manually installed the drivers, disabled the motherboard network adapter in the device manager. Used the network controls to fire up the stick.

Signal strength went from 1-2 to 4-5 bars. Ran speed test ping went from 145 to 11, download 5.6 to 18.9 mbs, and upload from 3 to 5.8.

If you want I can post the exact model of the stick when I get home from work, but I think it should work with any of them, that have drivers for windows 7.

Like I said, might not be the ideal solution, but those are around 30 bucks, so it's not a bad one.

    garyn123,

Some users are reporting success with the following -
    V91N8 DW1503
    MXX0D DW1506

Technical Support should be able to send you the wireless card without an onsite technician. But, if we replace the antenna, the onsite technician must do the work.

Hi Just likke to say also just taken delivery of my Alienware x51 and am having the same trouble with little to no wireless connection and when it does connect it drops all the time logging me out of my game. Been reading about this problem before i bought but assumed (wrongly it seems) it woud have been solved since earlier in the year. I'm only 10 feet from my router as well and thought i would be okay. Have borrowed a wireless usb stick from my brother for now and whie it gives me a solid connection it seems the max it can handle is 150 mbs , okay for now but i would prefer a more reliable and faster connection. Silly question but how do i find my service tag to try and report this? I would also prefer to try and sort this without an engineer visit as i work away from home a lot.

The antenna reroute must be done by our onsite technician.
