4600 power supply

My dimension 4600 power supply quit working, contacted the chat line we troubleshot system, replaced the power supply. System running normally. The following week it quits again, contact dell, they send out another PSU. Motherboard light working, Last Friday I installed it and when I powered up the PC I hear a "pop". Now PC and motherboard light inop. What happened? Is it worth it to replace MB, system is three years old.

    The motherboard light really does not mean anything about your motherboard.  It means that the power supply is providing one low voltage output.  Basically, it means that the power supply is receiving 110VAC.  You can purchase a higher quality power supply from any of a number of online vendors.  Your system can take a standard ATX power supply which does not have an on/off switch on the back.  Considering the cost of power supplies, purchasing a more powerful unit would probably be a good investment.

    If you keep replacing power supplies, & they keep failing, I suspect that the motherboard is causing the failure.  If under warranty, get dell to replace it.  If not, you should be able to find a 4600 MB on ebay for around $100
