Adding another hard drive
I have an older computer which is a Pentium 3 , 866 MHZ. I have only 2 IDE connectors on the motherboard and I have 4 devices connected to the 2 connectors. I would like to add another hard drive. I do have one open space for a second hard drive.
On the 3 connections I have :
one hard drive and CD rom on the primary IDE
CD burner and Zip drive on the secondary IDE
Can you connect a third device by connecting to any of these drives and what would you lose in performance.
One way is get a cd rom and burner in one. But I have an extra new hard drive already and I would only buy the new cd drive if that's the only way to do it.

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
No you can not add to what you have the IDE channels only support 2 devices each. You would have to either replace one of the existing devices with the new one or you would need to add a controller card for more channels for the additional device.

Your CD-RW drive already doubles as a CD-ROM so you could take out the ROM drive you have in there and be just fine.
I forgot to add that you could go out and buy a PCI expansion card and add a couple more IDE channels that way...

Thank you for getting back to me. The reason I would like to keep the 2 CD drives is that I can copy from one disk to another. It's simple. I guess I could put the data on the hard drive and then copy to the RW drive. I'll have to look into the IDE cards. Your info was informative and I'll have to decide which way to go.
