Adding RAM

I have a Dimension 8200 with 256 of RAM.  Lately the computer has been quite slow and is freezing up quite frequently.  I routinely do maintenance of defragmenting, virus scans, and just recently got rid of all the spy ware.  I was thinking of adding additional RAM to the computer...but how hard is that?

I am not very computer literate....

Thanks.

Scott

It's easy to add, but you will need to buy 2 matching sticks of rdram for your system and check to make sure you get the right ones for your system.

Is there any andvantage to adding brand name Dell memory as opposed to adding generic memory such as purchased at  a computer super store.  According to the technical specifications, I think I can add up to 2gig of RAM but Dell sells only 512 at a time for nearly $400.

    Thanks,

    Scott

Since your computer used to run fine and now has issues, adding memory is most likely NOT the fix.  What could be the fix is freeing up memory.  Start, Run, Msconfig.  Click on the Startup tab and uncheck everything that this site says to: http://www.sysinfo.org/startupinfo.php  Then reboot and check the box that says don't tell me again and you should be all set.

If you want to add memory anyway, the proper Samsung part numbers are on my site.

I have gone through the start up menu multiple times....and pretty much weeded most things out that were not necessary......though when I looked on the site today, I saw that there were some spyware things I might look at. (I am at work now).......

    Any other ideas?

I cant recall the specific number....but it is pretty high.  At least 66 percent, or greater.

I can check the acutal number when I get home.

Since you said in your post that you recently got rid of Spyware, I didn't mention that in my solution.  Now you say there are some spyware things...  Go to www.lavasoftusa.com and download AdAware.  Install it, open it, update it, run it.  Delete EVERYTHING it finds.  If you do that and my prior recommendation you should be fine.

I already have downloaded the Lavasoftware and deleted everything it found.  My comment about 'spyware' was when I went to the link you suggested, I couldn't help but notice that it 'alluded' to spyware being lodged into the start up menu.

My start up menu is pretty sparse.

    I have 48 gig left of 75, 65%

    Thanks for the insight.
