I have been able to shut down normally until this past Saturday. Normally is
click on start, click on Turn Computer Off, click on Turn off, I turn off monitor. The computer than goes thru the process and shuts off the power.
That is normal and it has been turning off with no problems. On Sat. night I did the usual, turned off monitor on Sunday when I went to turn on the computer I noticed that it didn't shut down/power off. It was at the screen 'Windows is
shutting down' . I pushed the on button on the tower and it turned off, pushed it again to turn on. I tried than the do a restart to make sure it was just one of those things but the computer hangs on 'Windows is shutting down'. I am left to use the power button to turn on/off. I can't even do a
ctrl-alt-del.I have read about making sure the APM is enabled under the Power Management section of the control panel but I don't have a APM tab! Nothing says APM. I tried to see if NT APM/Legacy Support was enable (read this on a site) I
clicked on View all hidden.... and there was No NT APM/Legacy Support so I installed it got an error "Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)" and now I have an exclamation point next to it. I don't know if this was a solution but did a Newsgroup search on the subject and tried somethings out before posting.
I've been to the MS Knowledge Base and it refers to the System Hanging on 'Windows is saving your settings'. I can get past that screen but hang on the screen after. So that was useless.
Like I said I have never had this problem until this weekend. I have not installed/uninstalled anything either!
I have a Dell Dimension 8100 upgraded from ME to XP. Bios TST 1.7 GHZ, 256 MB ram, Turtle Beach Sound Card, Geforce video card.
Any ideas?
