Dead Computer

I have a OptiPlex GX50 1.1 gig that I went to turn on one day and it just sat there like it was unplugged. I checked that it was plugged in, that all the power supply cables were fully seated on the motherboard and still nothing. The cooling fan for the power supply did not start, nor did the hard drive try to start up.

The only thing I could see that was getting power was a amber LED in the middle (approx) of the mother board.

Any ideas what is wrong? If the LED on the mother board is lit, then the power supply must be putting out voltage as it should, (I would guess).

Alas, this one went out of warrenty just a couple months ago..

Have you tried unplugging the system from the wall and then plugging it back it?  The system should try to perform a mini-boot after AC is restored (so the BIOS can check if you have AC restore turned on) and shut back down.  If the system isn't doing this, it's a good chance the power supply is toasted.

That was also one of my thoughts.
I have a old computer case with a 300 watt supply in it. I am thinking of getting it out, hooking the power plug to the Dell motherboard, pluging it in and hitting the power switch. I know the power supply in this other computer is good. So even if 300 watts is not enough to run the computer, it should at least start it booting up to let me know that is the problem.

    Thanks for the info

Do you have any lights on the power button? I'd wouldn't be going and plugging a non-dell power supply in. Dell have proprietry PSUs with different wiring. A non-dell psu is likely to guarantee further problems.

No.. No lights on power switch. The only lights I have at all are one amber LED in the middle of the motherboard. The power supply fan, hdrive or other drives light up or try to come on.

The GX150 uses a standard ATX 12V power connection.

If you have a tower then you can hack a hole in the back of the system and
put a standard GOOD QUALITY power supply in there.

For the Low profile, SFF and Desktop systems you must replace it with
a DELL supply IF you can get one.
