Dimension 4400
Interesting problem.
On bootup all devices initialize; no beep codes;
OS (XP SP2) starts loading. Half-way through splash screen monitor goes blank;
Switched monitors and Video Cards (so that is not the problem) System is still running.
On occasion the system will go through a cycle of reboots after this behavior.
When system comes up and leave system running all is fine. Log files show no hardware or software failures.
AV scans show system is clean.
Only thing that has changed on the system prior to the problem was a new game installed.
Identical system, (yes hardware specifications are identical I bought two computers at the same time) runs the same game no problem.
Any clue if hardware failure is suspect or os is suspect? Why?

Restored system incrementally backwards until the problem was eliminated. The problem was isolated to after MS Media Player 10 was installed and the new Game. Chalk another one up for M$.
I am fairly certain there is a conflict with Bejeweled 2 Deluxe and MS Media Player 10 on resource allocation for video.
