Help Please! Adding USB Driver...

Good Evening,

I own a Dell Dimension 4100 with a 1 Ghz CPU and I'm running Windows ME.

I recently purchased a Sony DSC-S85 digital camera which has a USB download capability. I installed the Sony USB driver software on my Dimension with no problems, however, when I proceed to the next step to actually install the USB drivers, the "Searching for New Hardware" box appears in Windows...but my computer seems to stop responding and never completes the process of finding the "new hardware" (i.e., the camera).

I know searching for newly installed hardware can be a very slow process in Windows, however, I've waited a full 30 minutes and never even get to 1% completed. I've tried twice, after rebooting my computer on each occasion. Same negative results.

The camera's USB drivers installed and operate just fine on my wife's older Dell XPS R-450, where she is also running Windows ME.

I'm out of ideas. Does anybody have any suggestions...besides just using my wife's computer?

Thank You,
Jim

See if you have hundreds of 0 byte oem*.inf files in your C:\Windows\inf folder. If you do, delete all of these files. See the following for more information:

    Steve,

Thank you very much for your response.
The description at the MS link you provided
describes EXACTLY what my machine has been
    doing when it locks-up.

I'm working on it now and I'll let everybody know if this
    repairs the problem.

    Thanks Again,
    Jim

    Steve,

I sincerely appreciate your help! I just completed the corrective action recommended in the MS link you provided me. BINGO!

My camera's USB drivers loaded immediately and all is again well.

    I owe you a beer!

    Thanks Again,
    Jim
