OK, here is the deal.  I unplugged all my drives:  3 1/2 floppy, DVD, and CD.  Finally was able to get a boot with the DVD unplugged and the others plugged in.

However, since the DVD and CD drives are connected thru the same cable, with the DVD unplugged, neither drive works or registers in Windows Explorer.

I presume all this means that the DVD is not functioning and needs to be replaced.

Your thoughts???

If you can get into Safe Mode than you might be able to get into Add and Remove from the control panel and uninstall the updates that you installed.   Cannot think of anything else for you except to do a re-install of window 98 SE.  Hope someone else will have a better answer for you soon.

Do you mean with the DVD 'Plugged' it doesn't work?
If this is the case, it sounds as tho the DVD may be bad...

With the DVD plugged in (as well as all drives), the computer will not boot normally but goes to Safe Mode.  When the DVD is unplugged, I get a normal boot.  However, since the DVD and CD are on a serial connection, even though the CD is still plugged in, neither drives are functioning.

Assuming the DVD is on the end connector, unplug both drives and plug the CDRW in the end connector. Leave the DVD unplugged for now. Double check the cable connection to the motherboard also. If the machine boots normally and the drive works, remove it and plug the DVD into the end connector by itself and try booting.
Sounds like you have either a bad drive, or a bad cable.
