Hotswapping help!
I have a XPS GEN 5
I intalled a mobile rack in order to hot swap a hard drive in out. The object is to load movies and music whenever I need to, pull it out, and dock it elsewhere for viewing, my ps3.
The drive is detected fine at boot-up, it is when I release the hard drive, it no longer will detect it when I re-insert it. Once ejected, the drive icon will remain for many minutes without a drive inside. It will then disappear. Whenever I need to re-insert the hard drive to load more stuff, the PC will not detect it. The work-around instead of rebooting, is to go to control panel and click "add hardware." The wizard will then detect all the devices, and the hard drive will be recognize again. I choose my drive and it's back!
I'm pretty much a novice, but my understanding of hotswapping or hotplugging is that I shouldn't have to go through all that. Isn't the point of hotswapping is for inserting and ejecting anytime you want while pc is running? There is no safely removal option like you would have for usb, so whenever I need to eject, I just pull the latch. Am I doing something wrong?
Is there any updates for the XPS GEN 5 to support "proper" hotswapping? Thank you in advance!

- I think that hotswap support is only possible if the SATA controller is set to AHCI.
Even then... a desktop wasn't intended for hotswap (sata). I'd recommend to get a firewire or USB enclosure and move that from system to system as needed.
