memory problems

I have a new dim. 4100 and have had many crashes in the first several days - I installed Norton System Works and that reduced quite a lot of the crashes - but when I test the memory in the diagnostics I get an error - the error location stays the same until I reboot - them it changes location(number). How can I determine if I had bad memory chip(s)?

I purchased the 3 year Type 3 Contract for next business day parts & labor On-site response but I have called for three days now and have been on hold for over 30 minutes each day - listening to hospital music - can someone please assist ?

I get crashes and low memory errors - but I am not sure if the memory problem is causing them.

thanks - fjc

Call the Tech Support Number (1 800 624 9896) and dial the extension 56534. This will take you to a Tech Rep. named Tammy. Tell her what your symptoms are and then tell her that Zachary Panacek with Service Tag #9RSG40B said try replacing the RAM. Why do you say that the RAM isn't the problem though?

    Please write back.

I called and left a message - I'll keep trying.

I know there is a problem with the memory - I'm just not sure if it is the only problem that is causing crashes.

    thanks for the help

Did you diagnose with Norton? If so, you may not have a memory problem. There is a know problem with Norton's memory diagnostics for systems with lots of ram. Run the diagnostic through set-up, in DOS, and see what you get.

I could have written the original posting... I am also running with a Dell 4100, notron system works, and having occassional lockups. When I run the memory tests I get a certain value (156,721,152 for example) and that value continues on each test retry. I reboot and there is a new value next time. I only see one address reported each time.

I have 384mb memory installed. I just went out and purchased 512mb of completely new memory -- substituted the old for the new parts, and STILL have the same memory error reported -- and a different address with each reboot.

I'm about to put this down as a norton problem, but I'd like to see another test give it a clean bill of health...

Was there any resolution to this issue in the last 10-1/2 months?

(BTW, I'm running Windows Me, and I've seen no new updates to the norton utilities.)
