Multiple Internet explorer windows open, computer locks up

I have a sporadic problem.  (Well several times a day). When online (with AOL) the cursor changes to an arrow with two heads and internet explorer goes wild opening window after window.  Sometimes I can close them by rapid clicking with the mouse. Other times the only escape is toi shut down by pressing power off button.
Occasionally the computer locks anyway, but usually when online.
 
Hope this makes sense - I have a two-year old Dimension 4550.  Any ideas?

    This is not a hardware problem. Please post in the Windows XP forum.

    I agree with osprey4 that this isn't a hardware problem. 
     
    You should also check with AOL, their software is flaky sometimes and you said this only happens when you're using their product.
