Problem w Extension Cable and New Keyboard

I have an old "Dell by Microsoft" keyboard and a Belkin extension cable that I have been using for years without problem. I just got a new Dimension 8400 along with a new basic Dell quietkey keyboard. When I try to connect the new keyboard through the extension cable, the keyboard doesn't respond at all. The 3 indicator lights just blink constantly and the keyboard doesn't work. If I connect the new keyboard directly to my PC then it works fine.

Does anyone know what I need to do to get this to work? Do I need a different type of extension cable? Or did I get a keyboard with issues? Does anyone else have this type of setup working?

Some devices are not ment to work with extension cords. The keyboard may not be reciving the right amount of DC power to function properly. Dell keyboards are so cheap, that I would expect something like that to be the problem.
