RANDOM BOOT FAILURES WITH XPS 420

These occurr one in 20 boot ups - since I purchased the machine in November 07. Windows splash screen loads then black screen before log in. (Before I updated to bios a02 sytem would hang earlier at windows splash screen) Start up repair fixes then all ok again.  Just installed SP1 - all ok  -  but 1st boot failure post sp1 could not be fixed with start up repair and had to do safe mode start up. All fine again. Only had SP1 installed for 24 hours so will monitor. Noticed the boot failure often follows a windows update - as if the Pc readjusts  itself. Seen comments about vista and black screen on the web.

Any idea what this could be? Hardware/software?

It could be a few different things - but be aware that you have only a month left on your warranty (if you just got the standard 1 year). You might want to call Dell and eliminate the possibility of a hardware failure.

Agreed. Get in touch with Dell ASAP. Do you get any error messages?

    no error messages

I should add for a period of about 4 months  no boot problems, then re-appeared last week
