In other words, I want to push the power button to shut down the actaul power. You get the "It's now safe to turn off your computer" across the screen after windows shuts down but you still have power (fan) running, though windows has already shutdown.

don't really understand the question. do you mean having the hard drive go to sleep and when you touch something it wakes up the system?

yeah, and the screensaver (or the "none" screensaver - black) will kick in. Just a tap on the mouse or keyboard will re-awaken it, even though it's not officially in hibernate or sleep-mode....
Not sure what you're asking for.

what's wrong with just closing your open windows? That's all I ever do. I only shut the whole thing down when we go away on vacation, or the weekend. Figure it 'needs the rest' haha

If you would just post which model Dell Dimension desktop computer you have maybe some could help. Is it a 8200, 8100, 4400, 4100, XPX T-500, etc.

Furthermore, unless you have Windows 95 you will not likely get the message "It is now safe to turn off your computer.

Go to the following for information about your BIOS setup program:

    http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/systems/dwill/setup.htm

Look under the Boot screen and Power screen to see what options are available when you turn your system off. Each system works a bit differently and I have no experience with the Dimension V systems. On my other systems running Windows 98, no matter what, I never get the screeen that says "It is now safe to turn off your computer" and I have not seen that screen since the days of Windows 95. I can, however, make my machines shut down to where there is blinking cursor on the screen, with the computer itself still powered on, requiring me to manually shut the machine down.
