Shut Down Problem Still

This is really driving me crazy, and I'm hopeful others can give me yet some more pointers to try.

I have had a Dell 1G machine for about a year. It goes on about 6 a.m. and stays on until about 10 p.m. When I close down, about 95% of the time, it will hang on the "closing down windows" screen OR just give me a blank screen. I have to reboot in order to eventually shut down.

Thinking Norton might be a culprit, I've made changes to it suggested (not checking floppies, etc.), even disabled it at times. That's not it.

I've gone to Microsoft and downloaded their program "fix" for the problem. That's not it.

What I *have* noticed is this....I have a cable modem and get on the internet via @home. If I try to close down the machine after just being on the internet, I'm GUARANTEED a hangup. There is something with the internet that is preventing a closedown. It might (?) additionally be a memory/resource issue? Although I might boot up at 88-90% resource, sometimes when I close I might be down to 77%. If I get that low, I often have trouble closing.

I know this is vague but that's what I've noticed. If anyone can offer ANYTHING else to check, I will gladly try it. I'll be passing this computer on to my husband soon in order to get myself a new Dell, and I know he'll complain about this mightily. Any help greatly appreciated........Peggy

It would really help to know your system model and operating system version, as well as what all you have running automatically at startup (Zone Alarm and MyNetWatchman are two programs that are famous for causing shutdown problems), but absent any of that, you might try the link below. Just choose the link for your particular OS, and start reading - the possibilities are endless.

If you are using Win 98 SE, this is typical.

This is caused by some program not shutting down properly.

To identify the program, before shutting down, do a ctrl-alt-del and shut down everything except explorer and systray.
If this fixes the problem, you can shut down some, but not all, of the programs. Eventually, you will isolate the culprit. Then check for updates or patches.
