Shut down problem
When I shut down my new computer (Inspiron Desktop 530) the process is interupted by the following message:
The instruction at "0x000e1758" referenced memory at "0x000e1758", the memory could not be written. Click on OK to terminate the program. Click on CANCEL to debug the program.
If I click on either OK or CANCEL, the message disappears, and shutdown continues successfully. Not the end of the world, but very irritating, as I can't just click on SHUTDOWN and walk away (The apparent repetitive phrase is exactly as is, and not my error!) Anybody know how I can get rid of the thing? Thanks

When I press F12 during the Dell Screen, all I get is the Boot page, with no apparent link to the diagnostics page. Is there another way to get there?David Whitson

I have now successfully run a diagnostics memory test, which comes up with "Pass" on everything listed. I have also downloaded and installed User Profile Hive Clean-up service. Sadly, the problem persists, and I am still getting the same message during shut-down. Any other ideas, or shall I learn to live with it?- Get inside and reset the RAM modules. Make sure that you press hard enough to get the eject levers to click shut. If this doesn't help, try installing just one module at a time (how many do you have and what is the total RAM) in socket 1 and boot/shut down to see what happens. If this doesn't help, install the same module in each of the sockets to see if there is a socket problem. Post the results back and we will go from there.Dimension 9100, Dual-Boot Win XP / Vista Home Premium, 3.0 GHz P4, 3 GB DDR2 533 MHz RAM, 160 GB SATA II Samsung (XP), 300 GB SATA II Seagate (Vista), 250 GB SimpleTech USB (WD Drive), Nvidia Go 6800 (425/825 MHz - XP, 400/800 MHz - Vista, Vista Driver - 163.75), Dell 1901 UltraSharp FP

This sounds a bit extreme for me! I,m a bit scared of opening up a computer to check components. I don't think I would recognise a ram module if it bit me! I shouldn't have to be doing something so drastic with a new computer, should I? Is this literally the last resort, because if it is, then I may have to learn to live with the irritating error message!- Then you need to call Dell for technical support. However, many initial PC problems are related to memory modules and add-in cards becoming loose during transport. One thing you could try is download a free registry repair tool and see if it can fix the problem. The best one Ii have found is Wise Registry Cleaner. Several not-free repair tools indicate they can fix this type of problem, but I can not guarantee it.Dimension 9100, Dual-Boot Win XP / Vista Home Premium, 3.0 GHz P4, 3 GB DDR2 533 MHz RAM, 160 GB SATA II Samsung (XP), 300 GB SATA II Seagate (Vista), 250 GB SimpleTech USB (WD Drive), Nvidia Go 6800 (425/825 MHz - XP, 400/800 MHz - Vista, Vista Driver - 163.75), Dell 1901 UltraSharp FP

You can see the layout of the motheboard in the user manual here:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/inspd530/EN/OM/PDF/OM_EN.pdf
Follow instuctions for adding/removing RAM modules. Not very difficult.
If you do opt to use a registry cleaner, make a backup copy (export) of the registry first and save it to disk. That way, if the cleaner does something stupid, you can quickly use the backup copy to fix whatever new problems might come up.
Good luck!
