To understand what makes a Triniton better than an ordinary CRT, you have to understand that it doesn't work the same as a regular CRT. Most CRT monitors use a "shadow mask" technology, which means the front of the screen has a small piece of metal with circular holes punched in it for the light to get through. Triniton's don't use that method. They use a lot of very thin wires running vertically, and since these wires are so numerous and fragile alone, it takes a few stronger horizontal wires to support them. You know those few lines you always see running across your screen from one side to the other? That's what they're from. There's a wire there and it's leaving a shadow. This second CRT method is known as an "aperture grill".

If you want the same "type" of monitor, the good news is that you don't necessarily need to have one branded as a Sony Triniton. When looking around, if it uses an aperture grill type and not shadow mask, you basically have a Triniton quality monitor.

NEC still sells some Tron type tube monitors. The plants that produce CRTs are closing rapidly - it is very likely that before too long, the CRT will have gone the way of the vacuum tube as far as monitors and televisions are concerned.

Hi, guess I'm old fashioned too, but I love my Sony Trinitron CRT, especially for digital photography.

Has anybody any tips for using it with a Dell Studio laptop, any model, as I have not decided which to buy yet.
