sounds doesn't work

i have had a problem with my sound from my dell computer i am not sure wat kind it is but the info i have is this

  • Intel P4 2.8Ghz processor
  • 512 MB of Ram installed
  • 40GB hard drive
  • CDROM Drive
  • 1.44 Mb floppy drive
  • Ports: VGA, 2 Front USB, 6 Rear USB, PS/2 Mouse, PS/2 Keyboard, 1 parallel, 1 serial, Audio-in & out, and Ethernet

i have used the speakers with my ipod so i know it is not the speakers(dell speakers that came witht hte computer) and i tried using the headphone jack that is in the front where u lift up and there is the usb jack and headphone jack. and whenever i plug in the speakers nothing comes up witht the volume control or anything. i don't even think it is installed but i have no idea how to install them if they are not. so if someone could point me in the right direction i would be very thankful

Krista, to identify your system look at the front of it.  Dell usually includes the model's name on a name plate on the front of the system.  If you are still unable to locate the name then just go into the BIOS Setup by pressing the F2 key at boot up when the Dell logo appears.  On the top of the BIOS Setup page it will show you model number.

As for your sound, try re-installing the chipset driver and the audio driver for your system.  A driver re-install usually cures most sound related problems.  Without knowing your model number it is difficult to point you to the chipset and audio drivers that can be downloaded on-line.
