You really want to run scandisk from a command prompt. If this is Windows 98 chose start->shut down-restart in ms-dos mode.

Then type scandisk /? for the list of options and choose the thorough option.

Couldn't there still be TSR's loaded during startup that don't show up on Close Program? That's why I recommended doing it from DOS.

Are you end-tasking on everything except Systray and Explorer (and including screen savers, firewalls and anti-virus progs.) prior to running the scandisk? If not, that's probably why it's not working.

I am running windows 98 2nd edition. Thanks for the info, I'll give it a try.

You should have no problem running it with a simple Ctrl-Alt-Del on other progs., despite what persons unfamiliar with post order protocol/Netiquette would have you believe.

Just to add to Happy's post. I have found that if you have a home network by disabling Internet connection sharing that may help.

At the risk of sounding like an old fuddy-duddy, way back in time, around the period when the New and Improved DellTalk was put in operation at the end of 1999, there was an unwritten code of conduct (hereinafter referred to as Netiquette) that was observed here by all but the greenest rookie, wherein one did not "stomp on," "cut," usurp, displace, or otherwise impede the chronological flow of a thread unless the person getting stomped upon posted something dangerous, flat-out wrong, or totally unrelated to the subject of the thread. To do so was (and still is, in polite social circles, anyway) considered rude, presumptuous, and inconsiderate. Another exception to this rule might occur when the person posting is preparing a response that takes an inordinate length of time to compose and post, wherein another might actually get a short line or two in the thread ahead of them. I remember a day long, long ago when people actually apologized when this occurred. Some still do. I certainly don't expect nor request it from anyone in this day and age, but it still occurs occasionally, usually between users who have been around here a week or two.

Of late, all of this sort of consideration for others appears to have taken a colossal dump, to the point where frequently, it looks like a free-for-all, winner-take-all dog fight around here, more often than not in a form devoid of punctuation or distinction between upper and lower case characters (and I won't EVEN get into the horrendous spelling that's rampant in this neck of the woods), generally lacking in any hint of pride in one's work that might be expected from some, and in certain cases, just inexcusably RUDE.

To be sure, sometimes these incidents are the result of something unintentional, or merely the result of inattention to anything but the first post in the thread, however, recently, it appears that frequently there is little to no consideration given to persons who have volunteered their services prior to the new post, and that by virtue of one's own opinion of oneself, all matters of protocol and manners are irrelevant, as long as one gets one's 2 cents worth in.

The general concept as I recall it "back in the old days," was that one should never assume that their contribution was so much more valuable than that of another that it excused one from observing the natural, chronological flow of the thread - in other words, you stand in line, wait your turn, and observe the "first come - first served" doctrine, again, assuming that the post(s) you are behind do not fall under the scope of the exceptions noted above.

I trust that this addresses your request adequately.

**Note: I hope that mr. toad will understand that this response, which disrupted the flow of this thread, and which displaces his place in same, was placed here in direct response to a message directed from you to me, which would be one of the other few exceptions I can think of for posting anywhere one jolly well pleases.
