Web Design beginner best PC?
Hi all!
I'm new to this so bear with me.
I'm a beginner Web Developer currently developing sites on a laptop which is taking its toll on the poor thing.
Anyway, my problem is that I want a new PC but am really unsure of what to look for.
I am regularly using a range of techniques in both development and design and I'm guessing I'll need a fair bit of RAM for that, as it stands though I don't know how succesful I'll be and whether it's worth buying something with loads of memory and then not using it.
My other problem is that as well as using memory for storing all these flash files and images etc, I'll need to buy software to edit these files and web design software seems to take up a lot of memory so I want something that can run quite quickly and allow me to save large files but not cost the same amount as my total student loan for the last four years!
Any help would be appreciated in which is going to be the best option for me.
Thanks!
Cat

- Wow that was a quick reply. Thanks very much!if you check the task manager, do you see your processor utilization very high, or maybe the memory utilization very high or maybe even both? They are both very high yes, I'm not very good with the hardware side of things so I don't really understand what it means but at first I thought that moving files and images to a CD would help. I burned all my digital images, flash files, uni work etc to a DVD but it didn't seem to make a difference to anything.Did you want another laptop or were you wanting to go for a Desktop for this?
For my web design I want a desktop and then I can delete all web design applications from my poor laptop so it can run quickly again, yay!I would however recommend to get a (mini) tower and not a slim tower, as it would allow upgrading (in the future) to a regular videocardI've noted that down now thankyou, this is what I get confused about. I was told that laptops are more difficult to upgrade which is why I straight away decided on getting a desktop, lots of small and large local businesses deal in upgrades and I'd be able to get support quite easily. So, it's looking like this is the better option unless I do go for the dearer laptop like you mentioned. There's just so much choice and so many mb/gb numbers to get my head around, it would be a lot easier if I knew what I was talking about but I just know the simple English for what I want, which is a computer suited for a beginning web developer!I shall go and research mini towers and dual core processors, maybe when I come back I won't sound like such a girly bimbo :DThanks very much for your help again, Dev Mgr

If a desktop is fine, then pretty much any system with a dual core processor (even if it's an AMD 3800 dual core or Intel E2140) and 2 GB of memory should easily be able to make your webdesigning a lot smoother experience. I would however recommend to get a (mini) tower and not a slim tower, as it would allow upgrading (in the future) to a regular videocard. For webdesign this isn't very important, so using onboard (initially) will work fine, but if you ever want to extend the life of your system (a year or 2 down the road), the ability to put in a full height PCIe videocard would be nice.
If you're wanting to get another laptop, you first have to decide which size; 12", 13", 15", or 17". Then decide if you want to go with the integrated video option, or a 'real' videocard as chosing the integrated option on a laptop usually means there's no upgrade path. I'd go with 2GB of memory or more and consider getting a 7200 rpm laptop drive (more expensive, but may be worth it for your tasks).
